More than 70,000 alarms and interlocks are provided for accident-free and safe operation at the new EP-600 ethylene complex. The complex has been designed using advanced solutions aimed at high productivity, energy efficiency and industrial and environmental safety. Today the journalists were reported on this point and on the progress of construction of the important investment project of PJSC Nizhnekamskneftekhim. During the visit to the construction site, the representatives of the city and republican mass media were able to see the scale of construction activities with their own eyes. Lenar Nagimullin, Director of the Plant, presented detailed information on the construction of a new industrial facility, strategically important for Tatarstan and Russia.
Construction of the complex is a critical component in the strategy for socio-economic development of the Republic of Tatarstan, as well as improvement of the Russian chemical and petrochemical complex for the period up to 2030, which envisages a significant increase in ethylene production capacity to meet growing domestic demand and reduce import supplies of derivative products. Ethylene is used to produce polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene terephthalate and polystyrene. These are the materials needed to produce finished products such as pipes, wire and cable insulation, products for the automotive, aviation, household and medical industries.
Russia's share of ethylene production is only 2% of total global production. The country ranks 11th in this indicator, given that ethylene is the main product of petrochemical synthesis.
Commissioning of EP-600 will allow Nizhnekamskneftekhim to strengthen its position in the petrochemical market as a producer of a wide range of synthetic rubber, to transform itself into a major player at Russian and CIS markets in the sphere of production and sales of various grades of plastics, replacing, among others, their import.
The new facility will be able to process 1,800,000 tonnes of straight-run gasoline per year in order to produce ethylene and such target products as propylene - 273,000 tonnes, benzene - 249,000 tonnes and butadiene - 88,000 tonnes.
Linde, a German company, is the developer of the design and detailed documentation for the new EP-600 plant. Construction of the plant was started in May 2020. Currently, the excavation works have been completed. A total of 100,000 m3 of reinforced concrete structures and 26,000 tonnes of steel structures have been erected.
19.8 thousand meters of on-site networks and 41 thousand long-distance pipes and 56.6 km of cable trays were laid, and 425 pieces of equipment were installed.
Particular attention is paid to ensuring environmental safety. At emission sources, the systems for their monitoring (CEMS) have been designed that provide online monitoring with data transmission to control stations and regulatory authorities.
Modern, efficient dual-zone burners will be used to reduce the formation of nitrogen oxides, and efficient decoking cyclones will help to prevent entering of suspended solids and coke into the atmosphere.
As part of the complex, there will be a local wastewater treatment plant that will ensure a zero discharge of industrial wastewater. Besides, the water will be recycled back into the process after its treatment, thereby reducing the Kama River water adding.
630 jobs will be created upon commissioning of the complex. Graduates of local colleges and universities will have the opportunity to work at modern and safe production facilities. Tax payments to the budget of the republic and the city will also increase. The construction of EP-600 is scheduled for completion in 2023.
During the tour, media representatives visited the construction site, where at present more than 2,500 workers are employed. The journalists saw how the pyrolysis furnaces of the ethylene complex are being constructed and visited the shift camp. Here they familiarized themselves with the working and living conditions of the specialists of the general contractor, Turkish Gemont Ltd. Project Manager, Yashar Kandemir, gave a detailed description of meal arrangements, recreation and leisure activities, as well as observance of industrial safety rules and anti-covid measures by the contractor's employees. Besides, the participants of the press-tour visited the shop for production of pipe units for the new complex, which significantly expedites the pipelines’ installation process. Here, they were told about the specifics and advantages of the site and were given a demonstration of not only the manufacturing process of pipe products, but also the process of strict control of finished products, performed both by the manufacturer and the customer.
Discussions regarding Complex construction were continued during the press-conference organized for the journalists at the head office of "Gemont" Company. Airat Safin, General Director of PJSC Nizhnekamskneftekhim, and Mukhittin Aktash, General Director of OOO Gemont acted as speakers.
The Head of Nizhnekamskneftekhim spoke about the importance of EP-600 construction for the city and the Republic of Tatarstan both in terms of fulfilling social obligations to create new jobs and a significant increase in tax payments to the consolidated budget of the Republic in the coming years. Airat Safin paid much attention to the economic significance of the complex under construction for the region and for the country as a whole. He highly praised the quality and pace of construction of the industrial facility, which is being built by 18 Tatarstan companies.
Muhittin Aktash, the head of OOO Gemont, told journalists about the experience of working in Tatarstan, where the Сompany is registered. Fifteen thousand sterlet fry were released into the Kuibyshev reservoir by the specialists of the PJSC Nizhnekamskneftekhim Environmental Safety Department. The action took place in the water area near the village of Betky, Tukaevsky district. It’s just the place where juvenile sterlets were transported from the Fish Hatchery using a special vehicle equipped to maintain the necessary conditions for fish life in the containers. This is only the first stage of the work. In total, in 2021, it is planned to release 125,616 sterlet fish (this is more than four tons of fish products). PJSC Nizhnekamskneftekhim is one of the largest water consumers in the Republic of Tatarstan.
The Company's Environmental Safety Department together with representatives of the Srednevolzhskiy Territorial Administration of Rosrybolovstvo monitored the release of juveniles. The commission confirmed that the fry condition before release was satisfactory and that all release requirements had been met.
Ecological compensatory measure for artificial reproduction of aquatic biological resources is carried out within the framework of the corporate program for preservation of biodiversity at PJSC Nizhnekamskneftekhim facilities location. The water intake facility in question is on the company's balance sheet. It is situated in the Krasny Kluch settlement and is intended for water intake for technical needs of Nizhnekamskneftekhim and for supply of potable water to the residents of Nizhnekamsk. The water intake facility has an effective fish protection device allowing to minimize damage to bioresources, but does not exclude the possibility of larvae and juvenile fish entering into the water intake device.
Therefore, for Nizhnekamskneftekhim, the replenishment of bioresources is an important component of nature-conservative measures taken at the enterprise. The amount of released fish depends on the volume of water withdrawn from the reservoir. The second stage of fry release will take place in October.
Joint activities in the field of sustainable development and the circular economy involve sharing of experiences and best practices, implementation of environmental initiatives, awareness-raising and educational projects aimed at increasing environmental culture and awareness.
Particularly, one of the directions will represent the development of plastic recycling. Thus, this year, Nizhnekamskneftekhim launched a pilot project to install reverse vending machines (fandomats) for collection of used plastic and aluminium packaging. The first devices were installed in six sponsored educational institutions, and two more fandomats appeared in the industrial area. Due to SIBUR's involvement, the collected plastic will be recycled, where after the prepared recycled material will be sent to POLIEF in Bashkiria to produce "green” PET-pellets Vivilen rPET. New bottles, consumer goods and packaging for them - with a smaller carbon footprint - can be produced from this environmentally friendly material with recycled content.
Today the Company executives got familiar with the operation of one of the fandomats located in the outpatient clinic of SOGAZ “PROFMEDICINA-NK”, LLC.
“From year to year Nizhnekamskneftekhim demonstrates high results of the large-scale environmental work. The new V Environmental Program for 2021-2025 accepted this year is the basic component of activity in the field of stable development. It is a purposeful systematic work organized at Nizhnekamskneftekhim, in the course of which for the first time in Nizhnekamsk our Company launched a pilot environmental project for separate waste collection. In our sponsored educational establishments - schools No. 25, 32, 36, 37, Lyceum No. 35, Lemaev College of Petrochemistry and Oil Refining we installed six fandomats designed for collection and primary recycling of aluminium and plastic packaging," said Airat Safin, General Director of PJSC Nizhnekamskneftekhim.
He noted that almost all the pupils at the sponsored schools have become involved in separate waste collection and have learnt how to dispose of plastic containers.
“As part of the ESG agenda, we will continue this work together with SIBUR. Our common goal is to teach the younger generation of Nizhnekamsk residents to collect rubbish separately and recycle it, saving the planet from household waste pollution," said Airat Safin.“The project of Nizhnekamskneftekhim to install fandomats in schools and the efficient scheme of returning plastic containers to production formed by SIBUR is a striking example of a project in the field of sustainable development. Based on the results of the collection, transportation, recycling of plastic bottles into flakes and recycling into food-grade PET pellets, the PET bottle will get a new life! Schoolchildren of Nizhnekamsk participating in the collection as well as in educational programs held through mediation of SIBUR and Nizhnekamskneftekhim will have an opportunity to make a conscious contribution to the ecology of our country," said Alexander Petrov, SIBUR Board Member, Managing Director.
PJSC Nizhnekamskneftekhim Plastics Plant has started production of a new special grade of low melt -flow general purpose polystyrene - GPPS 30FEB. This product is intended primarily for producers of food packaging.
