The first bromobutyl rubber bale of BBK-246 grade was produced on May 2004 at Butyl Rubber Plant of PJSC Nizhnekamskneftekhim, in June of the same year the Plant started to produce the most in demand BBK-232А brand. And in March 2004, petrochemists mastered the production of chlorobutyl rubber. Both rubber types refer to halobutyl rubbers (HBR), which none of Russian industrial enterprises had been producing at that time. PJSC Nizhnekamskneftekhim had become the third company on the planet, grasping the HBR production technology. Today, the BK plant is one of the world’s largest and the only Russian producer of halobutyl rubber used for inner liners of automobile tires. The company's products are highly demanded by the world’s largest tire companies.
Due to its special properties chlorobutyl rubber is used as a raw material for production of tubeless tires. Tire and rubber industries, manufacturing of medical products, various types of glue are fields of application for bromobutyl rubbers.
It took less than five years to master the entire process of elastomers production - the time limit is almost a record one for production of products in such volumes and of such complexity. A program was developed and approved in 2004; a program aimed to increase the total production capacity of BK and HBR up to 100 thousand tons per year was implemented within the following 2 years.
The 3rd hydration system at BK-4, the 6th polymerization system and the rectification column for return products at BK-5, three dryers at BK-7, the Welding-2 rubber finishing and drying unit at BK-6 were installed as a part of the program implementation.
A further increase in BK and HBR production up to 120 thousand tons / year was carried out with the launch of the third chloromethyl compressor unit at BK-7 and the 7th polymerization system at BK-5 in December 2007.
Since 2010 there had been a continued increase in plant capacities up to 200 thousand tons per year, including the HBR production increase up to 100 thousand tons per year. The technical re-equipment of butyl and halobutyl rubber production units was carried out in the process of the production scale-up. The Welding-3 rubber finishing and drying unit was assembled and put into operation in August 2011, the 8th polymerization system in February 2013, the TMK synthesis unit with a new reactor in January 2013. The fourth Welding unit for rubber finishing and drying was put into operation at the Butyl Rubber Plant on April 22, 2015. The works under the BK and HBR production expansion program up to 220 thousand tons per year were completed in April-May 2017 by putting of the ninth polymerization system in operation.
Today, the HBR quality meets all the consumers’ requirements and is highly competitive with the best foreign analogues. The Nizhnekamsk HBR production technology is somewhat different from the western one and is as environmentally friendly as possible. The halogenating agent - bromine undergoes several processing processes, therefore it is not released in the environment with the wastewaters, it is recovered and used for production again. A further improvement of production processes is carried out in order to improve a product quality.
